The Demographic Make-up of the University of North Carolina System

Davion Washington

Drawing inspiration from the visualization style of “A series of statistical charts illustrating the condition of the descendants of former African slaves now in residence in the United States of America”, first exhibited in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle (World Fair) in Paris, France by W. E. B. Du Bois and his team of researchers at what was then Atlanta University, this visualization uses pie graphs of demographic data from University of North Carolina System institutions over time. The pie graphs have been mapped out using the geographic coordinates of each institution to show both time and location.

Data used to create this visualization include North Carolina State University demographic archive data and IPEDS data.
