Drowning in Debt

Alison Armstrong, Jackson Bostian, Lleyton Seymour, Yu Su

Through their visualization, Armstrong, Bostian, Seymour, and Su explore the impacts of debt and disparities in borrowing, funding, and paying off debts in the context of education, particularly highlighting the impacts of race on student debt. This serves to highlight disparities in different stages of life to highlight the impact of debts building on each other and the effects of debt on generational wealth. Drawing upon Du Bois’ belief that there is no talent disparity, only systemic issues that lead to inequity, the artists’ goal was to visualize and personify student debt disparities and the impacts on generational wealth.
